Today I want to talk about something I hear a lot from my clients: “How can I get inspired to lose weight?” I’m Manuel, an expert in weight loss and a registered dietitian with over 20 years of experience, and I’m going to share my insights for this question.
Whether you’re just starting or have been on this journey for a while, it can be tough to stay motivated.
But here’s the good news—there are ways to reignite that spark, and I’m here to help you do just that.
PART 1: Accountability is key
One of the most powerful ways to stay inspired is accountability. I always tell my clients, “You don’t have to do this alone.” Having someone to check in with—a dietitian, a coach, or even a friend—can make all the difference.
Some of my most meaningful sessions have been with clients who didn’t even want to show up because they felt like they’d “failed.” But here’s the thing: that’s when you need to show up the most.
When we finish the session, they’re not just motivated—they’re inspired. Why? Because we focus on solutions, not shame. We figure out what led them off track, create a plan, and celebrate the small wins.
So, if you’re struggling, don’t avoid accountability. Lean into it. That’s where the magic happens.
PART 2: Focusing on Actions, Not Numbers
Here’s another critical mindset shift: don’t chase a number on the scale. I can’t stress this enough.
Some of my clients come in saying, “Manuel, by next week my goal is to lose 2 pounds.” And my response is always the same: “Let’s not focus on the outcome. Let’s focus on the actions that will get you there.”
Simple, doable steps can create big results:
- Set a shopping day to stock up on healthy foods. A kitchen full of colorful, nourishing options can inspire you to cook meals aligned with your goals.
- Cook more often. You don’t have to be a chef! My blog has easy recipes to help you create delicious, healthy meals.
- Track what you eat to build awareness. Seeing your choices can inspire small changes that add up.
- And yes, eat more fruits and vegetables. They’re not just nutritious—they’re flavorful and energizing!
It’s about progress, not perfection. Those consistent actions will get you where you want to be.
PART 3: Find Your “Why”
Another way to get inspired? Find your “why.”
Why do you want to lose weight? Is it to feel more confident? To keep up with your kids? To improve your health?
Whatever it is, write it down. Keep it somewhere you’ll see it often. When times get tough, it’ll remind you why you started.
How to Get Inspired to Lose Weight
So, if you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, remember these three things:
- Build a system of accountability. Show up, even when it’s hard.
- Focus on actions, not the scale.
- Connect with your “why.”
