Whole Grains Lower Risk of Colorectal Cancer

New research from the American Institute for Cancer Research has independently linked the consumption of whole grains with the prevention of colorectal cancer. They were also able to conclude that the more whole grains you eat, the lower the risk. Whole grains are defined as grains that have not been refined such as brown rice, black rice, quinoa, whole oats, among others.

The report concluded that eating 3 servings of whole grains a day lowered cancer risk by 17%. This makes sense, as we already know that sufficient fiber intake also prevents risk of colorectal cancer.

Dietary and lifestyle factors that have been found to promote this cancer include being overweight or obese, consuming 2 or more alcoholic drinks per day and eating a high amount of processed meats such as hot dogs or bacon. The American Institute for Cancer Research concludes that 47% of these cancer cases can be prevented by lifestyle changes.
